Mary Monahan is an actor, writer, and producer who lives and works in New York City and Santiago, Chile.
In addition to numerous roles in independent theater and film, she staged a
co-production with Santiago A Mil of DOE, by Trista Baldwin (2011).
Recently, she has focused increasingly on telling stories close to home. Beginning with “Moonage Daydream,” the one-woman show that she wrote, produced, and performed at the United Solo Theater Festival, NYC (2016), Philadelphia Fringe Festival (2017), and the Best of United Solo Theater Festival (2019).
In collaboration with filmmaker Nicole Costa, she developed and performed in the 11 min video Danger & Alone (2018), which frames a survivor’s process in coming to terms with her sexual assault. It premiered in the national short film competition at SANFIC 13 Film Festival (2018), Santiago, Chile, and was subsequently exhibited at Chile Arte Contemporaneo (Ch.ACO) Art Fair (2018) in Santiago, Chile, the film festival OFTALMICA (2019) in Veracruz, Mexico, and Festivalie Mujeres & Arte (2021) in Madrid, Spain. Monahan and Costa, together with urban artist Mauricio Arenas, have been using a version of that video as the kernel of a series of guerilla interventions across New York City at seven sites associated with acts of sexual predation.
